History of the Society and the Current State of the World

The basic goal of the founding of this Society is to establish better treatment methods for various neurological disorders. The best way to achieve this basic goal is for clinical physicians who deal directly with patients to come together and, based on past experience and the latest information, make repeated efforts to discover more effective treatment methods. To date, this Society has made progress little by little under this philosophy, but in the field of neurological disorders, there are still many groups of intractable diseases for which no effective treatment has been discovered. For these groups of diseases, simply gathering together clinicians to repeatedly conduct research will not easily lead to a solution.

Meanwhile, the 20th century was a period in which the natural sciences showed the fastest progress in human history, but research in so-called life sciences lagged significantly behind other fields. There are thought to have been various reasons for this, but recently it has finally become apparent that we are seeing momentum to make up for this lag, and anticipating this, the 21st century has come to be called the century of biotechnology. Along with this progress in life sciences, it is becoming apparent that there is a possibility of a breakthrough in the treatment of neurological disorders.

Considering the future of the society

In this new situation, we need to consider what role our Society can play to best contribute to this progress.

In fact, this has been a concern within the Society for several years, and we have been gradually calling on related parties in practice. We wondered if it was necessary to develop the Society of Neurotherapy from a society for clinicians only into a society based on a broader base. As a result, we came to believe that one of the raison d'etre of the Society is to have researchers in biology and basic medicine, as well as those involved in the development of new treatment technology for neurological disorders, participate in the Society, and have them directly listen to us for what we clinicians are most troubled by, and to collaborate in research into where the problems lie in the nervous system, what methods can be used to solve the problems, for example, what are candidates for drugs, and how to actually investigate their efficacy and safety.

In our 20-year history, we believe that we have been able to build a foundation as an organization of clinicians who wish to advance neurological treatments. From now on, we would like to use this organization as one of the cores and have researchers from other fields participate more widely, aiming to develop our society as a place for better treatment and their efficient discovery.
